Ochivaye Dreams

Ochivaye Dreams 16 – Dream of Sharing Rwanda to the World of a Rwandese Tourism Warden

“Yes I can”,......... everything can be achieved if staying optimistic.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was arranged a trip to visit Nyungwe National Park by the Rwanda Development Board, and was taken cared of by Kambogo, the Tourism Warden at the Park during my stay.

Kambogo wore a heartful smile all the time, and I could always feel his sincerity and passion. He shared he is now living a happy life because he has been achieving what he planned. He love his job at Nyungwe National Park very much.

Knowledge is the Power
Growing up in Kitabi, Kambogo came from a poor family with 7 siblings. His mom told them if you want to develop you have to study. He saw successful people around and he had confidence he could do the same. At last his siblings just finished the basic primary education and are now living simple village life, while he was the only one went to higher studies.

In University Kambogo was majoring in Geography and Languages, and was a Secondary School teacher for 2 years after graduation. He thought if he could teach students he could also teach tourists. The basic requirement for a tour guide was degree holder and good communication skills. Kambogo had good proficiency in English and French. When he saw the advertisement in guiding, he applied and passed successfully.

The Road to the Tourism Industry
Kambogo started as a tour guide without any related knowledge. He liked his job and was motivated to learn from his colleagues about different tourism products. There was also job training to facilitate. Through guiding tourists Kambogo was performing well and got promoted to be a professional guide. It was another challenge for him as he needed to learn new skills for the new position. However, he saw it as an opportunity for him to go further. In 2009 he went to South Africa for 3 months to learn the basic tourism management skill, and to Japan for 1 month training too.

After working at Nyungwe National Park for 8 years, Kambogo admitted he never thought of working in the other 2 National Parks. Nyungwe is a good school with very rich biodiversity, plants and primates. The most important thing was there was opportunity for him to have promotion and training.

Realization of Own Dream
Through working in tourism management, Kambogo kept thinking how to perform and how to equip himself further. He got skills and training in tourism. He likes working in a multi-cultural environment. His insights came, he decided to set up a private tour company to sell Rwanda to the world.

So what would be the basic requirements to have his own company? Kambogo thought. First he would need a driving permit, so he went on learning driving. He needed further studies, so he spent 3 years in a tourism school. He wanted to have his own house, so he worked with the bank to sort things out. Kambogo enjoys making short plans and he feels satisfied once they are achieved.

The next plan is to start his company within 3 years. Kambogo needs to have ideas what packages he needs, so he will need to talk to successful person in the industry, to gather information and to get new ideas. He will then need to start the basics like the websites for the company. The last but not least, is to be ready to kick off.

Helping Himself while Helping Others
Nyungwe area is one of the most populated area in Rwanda with more than 500persons/ km2,which is also a sign of poverty. Kambogo needs to think how local people can also benefit as more tourists come to visit the park, so he decides to open a community based tourism company. Visitors can learn about people’s culture, their normal way of living, traditions, handicrafts, dance, etc. At the moment there are less than 3 Eco-tour companies in the whole country, and Kambogo believes it is the best way to bring direct benefit to the local communities.

Why risking to start a private company than working comfortably in a government office? Kambogo shared there are 2 advantages. First thing is he can continue developing himself by getting new skills and experiences in tourism, at the same time sustaining his family. Second advantage is he can contribute selling and telling the good images of his own country, landscapes, hills, gorilla, chimpanzees, peace, cleanliness and smiles.

Rwanda is still a young destination with only 3 national parks, and very few tourism resources developed yet. Kambogo believes there are still a lot of opportunities to help people to understand Rwanda. He wish Nyungwe will be a famous tourist destination in years to come, with good hotels and a lot of tourism activities available.

“Yes I can”, Kambogo shared with me his favorite quote. He believes everything can be achieved if staying optimistic.

At last, Kambogo gave me a traditional wood carved handicraft as the present for exchange. It was a woman with traditional hair cover and clothes, holding a traditional Rwandese pot, with either milk or beer inside, to her husband. It is a respect for the wives to do this gesture to the husbands in Rwanda culture. Just like the present itself, Kambogo wishes to introduce his country culture to the world.

Ochivaye Dreams 15 – Dream of Traveling the World of an American Travel Journalist

“Once you take a gap year, you are addicted to it and knows it is not that hard to go back to work, or to reintegrate, or to find a place to live. How easy it is to leave things behind, and one can do it again anytime anywhere.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

During the 2 weeks I volunteered in DART House, a Girls’ Home in Mwanza, Tanzania, I met Francis, an American travel journalist who is currently in his grand tour of visiting all 54 African countries in 5 years’ time. He and I were both connected to the NGO through couchsurfing, and he was visiting my host in order to film the story of a NGO in Tanzania. I, therefore, had the chance to be his personal filming assistant for the day, and also got to know his inspiring travel stories.

The Unseen Africa
When people talk about Africa, there are always two extreme thoughts, heaven or hell. The heaven Africa is full of nature, tribes, pyramids, safaris. The hell Africa, on the other hand, is full of Aids, disasters, and now Ebola. However, the majority Africans do not live the extreme lives, Francis wants to capture sides of Africa which people did not hear about in media, which books and TV shows didn’t mention.

One example Francis shared was the Maasai, the most well-known tribe in Tanzania and Kenya, share only 2 % of the whole population. It shows how media emphasizes something small and makes it dominant and well known. He started his trip in March 2013 and aims to finish in Dec 2017, one country a month, to cover all 54 countries in Africa. He wants to help people understand all the little countries, especially in the west Africa, by filming different stories. After completing his Africa54 journey, Francis plans to publish a book “The Unseen Africa”, and also wish his filming clips will be purchased by National Geographic for documentary use.

The Talent from a Big City
Growing up in San Francisco, Francis had his first degree in Religion in Amherst College. After working in Latin America for 3 years, he studied MBA in Harvard University. Then he started his own company in Silicon Valley, and worked for 4 years in manufacturing inspection products.

Changing Point in Life
Francis did the Appalachian Trail in 2001 when he was 31, the trail was 3000km long and he spent 4 months hiking solo, on average 30-40km a day. It was the changing point of his life as he thought a lot during the solo hike.

Being surrounded by talents all the time, everyone was good at asking the billion dollars question, “How to make billion dollars?”. However, Francis decided to ask himself a different question, “What would you do with your time if you had billion dollars?” He knew many lawyers who would not be lawyers if they had billion dollars, and he knew many people totally forgot about their dreams after they got cars and houses. Many of his classmates were making lots of money and got paid very well after getting their MBA.

Finally, Francis found his answer, why he needed to wait till he had billion dollars to pursue his dream, why not changing his life he wanted to live and started living like a Billionaire. Francis wanted to be a travel writer, travel around the world, live with the locals, get to know people and share insights and experience. He wanted to inspire people in the world, and persuaded other people to pursue their own dreams.

Living the Dreams
After realizing what his dreams were, Francis needed to earn what he called the “Fxxk You Money”. With this money, anytime anywhere he could say “Fxxk you I am leaving”, no matters at work or in any relationships that he doesn’t enjoy. After his first solo hike, he spent another 4 years working in Silicon Valley as a consultant for Hitachi and Microsoft to earn enough “Fxxk You Money”. He then never works again since 2006 and only earns through investment. Francis believes if you do what you love, money will come. If you pursue your passion, you will find a way to make money by doing that passion.

In total Francis has walked across America 4 times. He did his second one, the Pacific Crest Trail, 4200km and completed in 4 months in 2006 when he was 36. His third one was the Continental Divide Trail, 7000km as he did a round trip and spent 7 months in 2007 when he was 37. The three trails he did are called the Triple Crowns in USA. To share his insights and experiences, Francis published his first book “Hike Your Own Hike”.

In 2008, Francis started his world trip. He spent 3 years in the eastern part of Europe till 2011, and published his second book “The Hidden Europe”.

The Never Ending Gap year
Francis joked that he is now having his 8th Gap Year. He has no plan to settle down in one country in the next 10 years, he may do so if he feels really tired, and has a little home in a village. His other travel plans include the Middle East, from Pakistan to Israel, and from India to the east part of Asia and Russia, last but not least, get a sailing boat to travel the Pacific Ocean including Australia, New Zealand and all the islands. However, he believes once you take a gap year, you are addicted to it and knows it is not that hard to go back to work, or to reintegrate, or to find a place to live. How easy it is to leave things behind, and one can do it again anytime anywhere.

Francis thinks he is now living his dream, and rated 9/10 on his happiness scale. He has no plan to have kids as they limit his freedom, however, it will be better if he can find his travel companion, and has the extra money to stay in nice hotels once in a while. He believes what he is doing now is just a different way of life, and would rather to focus on himself and try to inspire people as a way of giving back to the society, like giving TED talks and writing books.

“Don’t be afraid of death, be afraid of an unlived life. You don’t have to live forever, you just have to live” by Natalie Babbitt, an American writer, Francis shared his favorite quote with me. Malaria killed 1 million people every year in Africa, while Ebola only killed 5 thousands so far. Car accidents are preventable but people still don’t wear seatbelts in cars or wear helmets on motorbikes. Francis would rather enjoy his time traveling than worrying unpredictable things.

At last, Francis gave me his name card of Africa54.com as the present for exchange. He also wrote on the back of the card “Whatever is your #1 dream, you will achieve it”, a word for my next interviewee.

(Hike Your Own Hike)

(The Hidden Europe)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ochivaye Dreams

Ochivaye Dreams 14 – Dream of Helping the Village Children of a Tanzanian Volunteer Leader

"Achieving dreams is never simple, one needs to give up other things to make a dream comes true"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Peter was my couchsurfing host in Moshi, Tanzania. He was very new in Couchsurfing and had only 1 reference on his profile. He mentioned that he is running a NGO which works with the village children. In Tanzania, there are a lot of NGOs bringing in foreign volunteers to help in different projects but at the same time charging a questionable high cost. However, the only reference on Peter’s profile described it was a very meaningful experience to work at the NGO and so I decided to stay with him and find out more about the project.

Dream, should not only be in the Mind
When Peter was a child, he had so many dreams. He wanted to be a priest, a doctor, a teacher, etc. When he was in secondary school, he made up his mind he wanted to be a priest so that he could go around and preach with people. However, an incident he encountered during his high school period changed his dream again.

During a long holiday in his high school period, Peter had a chance to do volunteer work with the Student Association. They got donations from parents and use them to buy gifts to the children in need. They went to the poor villages a few times and met some very poor children and distributed the gifts. Peter was surprised how worse the poverty situation the children were living in. When he went back to his village, he realized similar problem also existed in his village. There was no NGO in his village doing any intervention to the community either. From that time on, Peter decided to work in his own community in the future and help the children in need.

The Beginning is always the Hardest Part
It would not be a simple thing to do, for sure. Peter knew he needed to gain knowledge in the University first, and to register the project. He got very good grades in high school and was selected by the government to go to a good University in Dar, the capital of Tanzania, to study Political Science. However, Peter knew it wasn’t his ambition and he wanted to study something that would take him to achieve his dream in the future. He told his mom and brother his thought and got their understanding and support.

Peter applied a 3 year degree program “Community Economic Development” in Moshi University at the end. He learnt about research, management, writing proposals, etc. While he was still doing his degree, he decided to start his project. He wrote the constitution and registered his project in district level. He started to look for an office and was accepted by a private school to temporary use their extra classroom to locate an office and to conduct programs.

Achieving dreams is never simple, one needs to give up other things to make a dream comes true. All his schoolmates looked for employment after graduation. He, however, decided to take risk and spend 2 years to build the foundation of the NGO, as a volunteer. His friends got employed and received income to take care of their families. He decided he won’t do so until he achieved his dream of helping the children in his village. He named his NGO Kilimanjaro Children Empowering Foundation (KICEF), aiming to help the children and community in need.

At first Peter asked his friends to help in his NGO but they were not so supportive as they also had to earn an income before promising anything. He then approached some teachers, some aunties and even his mom who already have their own income source so that they can volunteer and give support to the project. Finally there are 7 founding members and 5 board members in the whole team.

Path, was created by People
The first project Peter started with was called “Childpreneurship”, a word combined from “Children” and “Entrepreneurship”. He wanted to look for children in need but were at least 8 years old, and got recommendation by the primary school teachers and village leaders for over 100 children. However, Peter decided to start with little and slowly according to his time and resources. He chose 10 children who lived very near to his home as he can only visit them by foot or bike.

The project aimed to help the children to run income projects at home for extra food and school supplies. They teach them how to grow vegetables, keep chicken and sell eggs. He suggests they use one hour everyday after school, not more than that because they should maintain their regular attendance in school while working for the project. They also teach the children how to use water effectively, how to save money, do marketing with neighbors and to invite neighbors to come and buy their vegetables and eggs.

This year January Peter started his second project “Quality Life for Children”, aiming to take in children who are seriously in need of support, like homeless orphans who have no parents and get no support from relatives, to reside in their children centre and to receive education. Now he has taken in 2 children but is only borrowing the hostel from the school. He needs to find a fix location for hostel, and to get more resources like food, clothes, schools and medical items.

He hosted the first gathering for the children and their families from both projects last Saturday, and to congratulate those who just graduated from Primary School this year to show that even orphans can succeed in school if they work hard.

Dream, is supported by Bread
The 2 years will be up at the end of this year after Peter’s graduation from University. All the while he was only doing small jobs to support his own expenses, like teaching part time, doing gardening at home and selling vegetables. Since last month he has started to send out job applications regarding community jobs. Of course if he has capital he would prefer to run a business so that he will have the freedom to continue supervising his projects. However, it is easier to find an employment than to do a business.

In the middle of Difficulty, lies Opportunity
KICEF is now 2 years old, but still there are a lot of things to be done to become sustainable in the long run. First it needs a permanent address to locate the office and hostel for the Children Centre. Peter just got a land from the village government and he will now need to write a proposal to get donations and sponsorship of resources to build the buildings. He will also need to get more people to work in the team. There is still a long way to go till everything becomes true.

One idea Peter has is to sell solar run radios in his NGO to the villagers. He has a radio ran by solar energy at home, a gift his mother received by the school she worked at. Peter never saw where they are sold on the street. However, it was made in China and may be I could help to find out where they are sold in China. Many people from his village have no power access at home and no access to news as a result. Batteries run radios need to buy disposable batteries which are expensive and cause pollution as well. If KICEF could get a sponsorship of the solar run radios, he could sell them to the villagers. The villagers can get access to the news and information and get empowered, at the same time, he can get an income to sustain his NGO projects. It is a win win situation.

Another difficulty KICEF faces is failing to get volunteers and visitors due to the long distance from Moshi town. His village Kahe is 22km away from town and needs at least 1 hour minibus ride. There is a well-known agent in Moshi which connects foreign volunteers and local NGOs. He tried asking for help before but the agent refused to put his NGO on their list because the village is too far away and the transportation fee of volunteers would be very expensive. Now Peter hopes Couchsurfing can bring in individual volunteers to help in his projects instead. However, Peter believes one good thing of getting individual volunteers instead is the volunteers do not need to pay the high cost the agent is charging and could use the money directly to buy resources for the community. His first couchsurfing guests were 3 girls from Germany and they helped to purchase materials like mattress, food, clothes, shoes, books to the children in need.

Think about the Source when Drinking Water
Peter shared his favorite moral with me. When a village always suffered with hunger, the villagers still gave out everything they had to a youngster to go far to look for more food for the village. If the youngster stayed in town by himself and didn’t go back to the village, it is called betrayal. It is a metaphor for the opportunity of receiving education. After finishing education, someone should go back to the community he grew up and use his knowledge there, not to stay in town and let the community suffers.

Peter gave me a pair of earrings as the present for exchange. He found this pair of earrings lying around in his files. He asked around but couldn’t find the owner. Peter believe the earrings are a good memory to remind oneself to pursue dreams as they don’t expire and can be kept very long. If the next interviewee is a girl, she can just keep them and wear them directly. If he is a guy, he can give them to his girlfriend or wife to strengthen the relationship when achieving the dream together.
